This is a classic piece of chicanery that has been used by so-called 'mediums' and 'psychics' for centuries but never seems to lose its appeal to audiences both in private sittings and as a stage act.

It is, of course, the gypsy classic of reading from a crystal ball.

As ever, I want to point out that I am profoundly skeptical about 'psychic powers' and 'mediumship'. I know that it is all fakery and jiggery-pokery. I renounce anyone who uses these tricks to decieve others for anything other than the happy motive of entertaining and bringing pleasure. This is a trick and you should never attempt to engender people's genuine belief in magic as something supernatural.

This method has been used by mediums for years and among "believers" it was was never questioned.No doubt there are still charlatans who use it today.This is how the trick procedes:

Spectators write their questions on small cards, with dimensions of about approximately 1" x 2-1/2". The size of these cards is important as you will see from the following handling.

These cards are not sealed in envelopes but they are placed by the spectators, writing side downwards, on a tray held in the performer's left hand, or in the performer's assistant's hand if possible.

In any case, whoever is carrying the tray has concealed in the left fingers, a bunch of fake questions, which are held against the under side of the tray.

On his return to the platform, the performer or the assistant, palms off the genuine questions with his right hand and slips the fake questions in their place.

These are poured onto a separate metal bowl and, so that everyone can see that the performer is not going to cheat in any way, they are burned to ashes.

Now the fun begins! The performer sits at a table upon which is placed a large and impressive crystal ball (Buy a Crystal Ball Here) on a stand with a silk cloth or handkerchief nearby.

At the back of the table lies a secreted shelf. this shelf is the key to everything that happens next.

The performersits down behind table, wipes off the crystal, gazes into it, and pretends to get impressions from it.

What infact he does is simply manipulates the genuine questions on the shelf with one hand so he can secretly read them, and thus he proceeds through the whole bunch.

The rest is down to bravado and presentation, as is most mentalism magic.

Properly performed this crystal ball effect can truly mystify.
